Control Ableton Live With Your iPhone or iPad?

Could the future of software controllers for programs like Ableton Live be the iPad?  Well there are two apps trying at least to make it happen. With the release of the iPad a few months ago, the concept of a controller for Ableton Live was bound to happen. Instead of lugging around bulky usb controllers around and risk breaking knobs or buttons, the convenience of carrying around your iPad or even an iPhone seems very appealing.  Also the iPad’s ability to display almost a limitless configurations is a plus too.

The first app is called Griid and it is available for the iPhone and iPad.  It also comes in three flavors – Griid Lite(Free), Griid($5.99), and Griid Pro($24.99).  Griid Lite and Griid works with both the iPhone and iPad while Griid Pro only works with the iPad. Griid Lite is also free. Griid Lite allows you to try the Griid experience for free to make sure it integrates well with your setup before purchasing. Griid is basically used to control your clips from within Ableton Live. Check out these videos of what Griid can do.

The next app is called touchAble and is not available just yet and is awaiting approval from the Apple App Store. This app is more than a clip launcher for Ableton Live.

Here is a description of the touchAble app from the company:

Navigate around your live set with the touch of a finger, tweak Lives mixer, instruments and fx with full automapping and unlimited tracks & parameters.

touchAble allows live users to walk away from their computer and perform live from anywhere within Wi-Fi range while keeping latency at a minimum.

Play your favourite synths with the unique double keyboard or record your rhythms with the 16 drum pads, including 5 velocity steps & octave selectors.

Access the most important transport and clip functions without losing focus on your set and tweak the same set with two iPads with the unique Dual-User-Mode. Do you need to adjust volume, launch a new clip and play a device? Don’t worry – a smart and intuitive screen menu empowers the user to arrange and switch modules on the fly.
